The following Java(tm) platform software is now available for download on the JDC: JavaHelp(tm), JBUG, Java Platform Debugger Architecture Documentation, JavaServer(tm) Pages Specification 0.9.1, and JIT Update for JDK(tm) 1.1.6 Software Early Access 1. To access, see: http://java.sun.com/jdc/earlyAccess/index.html NEW JAVA(tm) FOUNDATION CLASSES (JFC) 1.1 AVAILABLE, featuring greater performance and improved documentation. JFC 1.1 provides developers with flexibility for creating and deploying a look and feel for Java platform applications, and contains the "Swing" Graphical User Interface (GUI) components, a pluggable look-and-feel architecture, and the Java Accessibility API designed to support assistive technologies for users with disabilities. To access the download, see: http://java.sun.com/products/jfc JAVA ADVANCED IMAGING API SPECIFICATION RELEASED (Public Beta Release 0.9). This standard extension API enables developers to incorporate sophisticated, high-performance image processing into Java applets and applications. The API implements a set of core image processing capabilities, such as image tiling, regions of interest, and deferred execution, and also provides image processing operators, including many common point, area, and frequency domain operators. To access, see: http://java.sun.com/products/java-media/jai JAVA MEDIA FRAMEWORK IMPLEMENTATION 1.0.1 RELEASED. Designed for integrating and playing audio and video in Java applications and applets, this standard extension enables developers to include memorable, effective, multimedia presentations in their applications. The release is also designed to improve MPEG video performance, DataSource functionality, and RTP compatibility. To access, see: http://java.sun.com/products/java-media/jmf JAVA SPEECH API SPECIFICATION RELEASED (Public Beta Release 0.7). This standard extension API is designed to enable developers to produce speech input and output for Java applications and applets using speech recognition and speech synthesis technologies. The API offers speech technology that enables dynamic and compelling user interfaces, improves accessibility, and complements and enhances the user interface of existing Java applications. To access the specification and the accompanying programmer's guide, see: http://java.sun.com/products/java-media/speech PERSONAL WEBACCESS(tm) 2.0 BETA NOW AVAILABLE. Personal WebAccess software is a customizable, compact Web browser for devices that run the PersonalJava platform. The software provides device manufacturers with an easy way to access the Web and retrieve information from the consumer devices they build -- including screenphones, home entertainment systems, and information appliances. Personal WebAccess 2.0 features a customizable, consumer-friendly user interface designed to accommodate the smaller displays of consumer devices. And because Personal WebAccess software is designed as a collection of JavaBeans components, device manufacturers can choose the level of functionality they need, from a basic HTML rendering engine to a full-fledged Web browser. For more information, see: http://java.sun.com/products/pwa/ JAVA NAMING AND DIRECTORY INTERFACE(tm) (JNDI) SHIPS. JNDI is a Java standard extension, and provides Java language applications with a unified interface to multiple naming and directory services in the enterprise. As part of the Java Enterprise API set, JNDI provides seamless connectivity to heterogeneous enterprise naming and directory services, and enables developers to build powerful, portable directory-enabled applications. To access, see: http://java.sun.com/products/jndi/ JAVASAFE(tm) NOW SHIPPING. A source management and versioning system designed for development projects ranging from producing program code to creating content for the Web. The product enables developers to coordinate enterprise development by synchronizing and managing multiple aspects of a project from a single point, including source code, documentation, executable binaries, and web site contents. To access, see: http://java.sun.com/products/javasafe/ JAVAMAIL API IMPLEMENTATION VERSION 1.0.2 RELEASED. The JavaMail API provides a set of abstract classes that model a mail system, and provides a platform-independent and protocol-independent framework to build Java technology-based mail and messaging applications. The API is implemented as a standard extension, and Sun Microsystems(TM) provides a royalty-free reference implementation in binary form that developers CAN use and ship. This release includes implementations of the core JavaMail packages -- javax.mail and javax.mail.internet. Also included are implementations of the IMAP and SMTP service providers. To access, see: http://java.sun.com/products/javamail/ HOTJAVA(tm) VIEWS(tm) 1.1.3 RELEASED. HotJava(tm) Views(tm) software enables enterprise deployment of server-centric, cross-platform, customizable webtop clients, and incorporates an intuitive user environment and a set of tightly integrated corporate communication tools for email, calendar management, name directory, and web browsing. The software is centrally installed, configured, and managed so that client administration costs are reduced and software distribution is streamlined. Plus, central management of user profiles allows corporations to easily customize and extend the environment for individual user needs. Supports Windows, JavaOS(tm) software, and Solaris(tm). To access, see: http://java.sun.com/products/hotjavaviews/ JAVABEANS(tm) IN THE NEWS. The JavaBeans(tm) Activation Framework has received 100% Pure Java certification, meaning that functionality incorporated into applications will work as expected across all Java Compatible(tm) platforms. The JavaBeans Activation Framework allows applications to recognize, access, and perform operations on data of an unknown type, so that, for example, developers can designate an email client that obtains a JPEG image as an enclosure to identify the data as a JPEG image. The client can then locate and access a JavaBeans component that can in turn manipulate or view the JPEG image. Developers can create applications using the JavaBeans Activation Framework for any platform that supports JDK 1.1, including the Solaris(tm), Windows 95, and Windows NT 4.0 platforms. In addition, the JavaBeans Activation Framework will be core to the next release of the Java Development Kit, which is JDK 1.2.
